My 'SoI'

SECTION ONE – Your Final Major Project

I will be working towards producing a short non dialogue experimental film that deals with are existence as seen through the everyday. I want to produce a series of picture sequences over a period of time. I am interested to observe time within different time frames. Eventually, I hope to combine these sequences into a longer piece that will demonstrate different aspects of life e.g. ‘Nate, 2010’, a previous film work, I have done, when I was exploring and experimenting with the idea of condensing time, the time that I take to get ready in the morning, this took a series of tasks that normally would take a considerably longer period of time. Because of the editing this was reduced down to three minutes rather half-hour, for instance. Here, I reduce the real time, by cutting sequences allowing the audience to explore the narrative.

SECTION TWO – Influences, Research, Sources and Ideas

My main influences are those film makers, photographers and some other artists that work with film or video. I am mainly interested in experimental documentary, rather than documentary in itself, because I would like to explore the idea of layers behind the conventional aspect of the film/video. I want to direct my attention towards the aesthetics aspect and the way I can conduct the editing, mundane life and expand the narrative structure on how we perceive moving images.

My influences with time Harmony Korine; who deals with the pace of films. Arnold Fanck; was one of the pioneers in the techniques employed in time-lapse photography. I will also look at the Soviet documentary film-makers such as Dziga Vertov’s –‘The Man with the Movie Camera’.John Ott, Who is a documentary wildlife photographer .Godfrey Reggio who is an experimental

documentary filmmaker and Ron Fricke who is a master of time-lapse photography and large format cinematography. I have picked these practitioners because they are to me all masters of time-lapse photography of which I want my film to use heavily. I intend for my standing point to me constructing experimental shorts of time-lapse like a sun rise and set and fruit going mouldy. I hope to watch at least three film/ documentary a week that is related to my project. I plan to make several contact sheets of photos one for each location I consider to film in (the lakes, the new forest, town...). I have also been looking at the conventions of film, looking at the narrative structure and how we view films. Artist I have looked at include Bill Viola an instillation filmmaker who explores time. Muybridge the founding pioneer of recorded movement and sequences. Peter Greenaway has also been a huge influence with his approach to traditional convention and time for instance his film ‘A Zen and Two Noughts.

SECTION THREE – Techniques, Processes and Timescale
I intend to use some techniques and processes with video and photography. I intend to use stop-motion and time-lapse photography along with others medias and techniques. For my video editing I will be using Final Cut Pro. For the audio I will be using Soundtrack Pro. For experimentation I may be using Apple Motion 3 to create other effects.

I plan to divide my time-scales into ten weeks (please see in attachment Appendix A)

SECTION FOUR – Method of Evaluation

I will critically review and analyse my work by writing a evaluation for it as well as uploading my film and work to the internet and showing my film in screenings and asking people for there honest opinion so that I can find out if it is a success. I will identify directions for ongoing development from the feedback I get. I have set up a blog that I will record my actions each day so it is clear that I am moving forewords. I will make a spreadsheet at the end of my project that peers can fill in with their views on the film and work as a whole.
