Filming: update

I have been out on location today filming more time-lapse.
My ideas for showing all the different locations is to get a clear idea of all of Eastleigh's areas so that I am not biased and that people can appreciate all of life not just one side. Locations I have and want to include are the lakes, the town, the shops, the airports, the roads, the motorways and the sub-urban areas. I am not having any actors in my film as I want my film to been seen as a documentary of mundane life. This is also the same reason why I will not be using props in my film.
I have not let chosen my music for the video but I was thinking of using a soft classic score for the slowed down film and a fast paced one for the speed up one. As for the sounds I will be recording them my self in a later date.

Sketch Book update.

Today I have been putting things into my sketch book, I have taken great care not to over rely on secondary resources to heavily.

To help with my research I have been using visual resources and finding out the dictionary definitions for key words in my project to help spark of my ideas.

update: one of the things I have found hard

I have been taking photographs on location today. The time I have left now is starting to scare me.

One of the things I have found hard is choosing a final idea that is achievable and relevant in the time I have. I feel confident that my ideas was creating 3 films of different speeds is as well do-able as it is effective. Taking photographs of my subject matter in order to create primary resources has taken me a lot longer in time then I would of liked but my video is still on track to-date.

The reson why I picked my question...

I was asked today the reason why I had picked my question my one of my peers so I though It would be useful to explain in in my blog. I am currently working on my sketch book at the moment.

The reason why I picked my question “Investigation of Time-Lapse photography and sequencing though the exploration of video and stills photography. Investigating the editing techniques though time in film to create a sublime experience.” was that I wanted to choose a question that I would be able to keep my enthusiasm up for and I have always has a keen interested for the passing of time and how it effects us.

Rainbow

I have just finished filming for two hours of the sky with a tree in the bottom corner. what made this diffrent to my others is that it was a very windy day so the clouds moved a lot faster then normal so gave a better over all effect. The best part was get the rainbow at the very beginning.

Moon-lapes

Ok so last night the moon was nearest to earth it has bveen for a very long time so I though I would do a timelapes of it moving across the sky. Insted of setting it for every 30 seconds, i did every 5 minutes. The end result was that the moon went too fast but on the plus side the battery lasted a lot longer so i got the sunrise.

Candle

I have been doing a arange of candle time-lapes in ther morning to evning. I had to stay home as it was unsafe to leave it burning on its own. One thing that went wroung with this was that i was un able to do anything else in the time. The other thing was the cell died before the candle was compleaty gone. Having these issuse i am still pleased with the outcome.

I did plan to have ' nat's fmp' but my mistake moved the tripod so only got the work Nat in sync. I them filmed some cows eatting and took a photo of me walking evry 30 seconds so show how i move and how far i can get in a set time.

My 'SoI'

SECTION ONE – Your Final Major Project

I will be working towards producing a short non dialogue experimental film that deals with are existence as seen through the everyday. I want to produce a series of picture sequences over a period of time. I am interested to observe time within different time frames. Eventually, I hope to combine these sequences into a longer piece that will demonstrate different aspects of life e.g. ‘Nate, 2010’, a previous film work, I have done, when I was exploring and experimenting with the idea of condensing time, the time that I take to get ready in the morning, this took a series of tasks that normally would take a considerably longer period of time. Because of the editing this was reduced down to three minutes rather half-hour, for instance. Here, I reduce the real time, by cutting sequences allowing the audience to explore the narrative.

SECTION TWO – Influences, Research, Sources and Ideas

My main influences are those film makers, photographers and some other artists that work with film or video. I am mainly interested in experimental documentary, rather than documentary in itself, because I would like to explore the idea of layers behind the conventional aspect of the film/video. I want to direct my attention towards the aesthetics aspect and the way I can conduct the editing, mundane life and expand the narrative structure on how we perceive moving images.

My influences with time Harmony Korine; who deals with the pace of films. Arnold Fanck; was one of the pioneers in the techniques employed in time-lapse photography. I will also look at the Soviet documentary film-makers such as Dziga Vertov’s –‘The Man with the Movie Camera’.John Ott, Who is a documentary wildlife photographer .Godfrey Reggio who is an experimental

documentary filmmaker and Ron Fricke who is a master of time-lapse photography and large format cinematography. I have picked these practitioners because they are to me all masters of time-lapse photography of which I want my film to use heavily. I intend for my standing point to me constructing experimental shorts of time-lapse like a sun rise and set and fruit going mouldy. I hope to watch at least three film/ documentary a week that is related to my project. I plan to make several contact sheets of photos one for each location I consider to film in (the lakes, the new forest, town...). I have also been looking at the conventions of film, looking at the narrative structure and how we view films. Artist I have looked at include Bill Viola an instillation filmmaker who explores time. Muybridge the founding pioneer of recorded movement and sequences. Peter Greenaway has also been a huge influence with his approach to traditional convention and time for instance his film ‘A Zen and Two Noughts.

SECTION THREE – Techniques, Processes and Timescale
I intend to use some techniques and processes with video and photography. I intend to use stop-motion and time-lapse photography along with others medias and techniques. For my video editing I will be using Final Cut Pro. For the audio I will be using Soundtrack Pro. For experimentation I may be using Apple Motion 3 to create other effects.

I plan to divide my time-scales into ten weeks (please see in attachment Appendix A)

SECTION FOUR – Method of Evaluation

I will critically review and analyse my work by writing a evaluation for it as well as uploading my film and work to the internet and showing my film in screenings and asking people for there honest opinion so that I can find out if it is a success. I will identify directions for ongoing development from the feedback I get. I have set up a blog that I will record my actions each day so it is clear that I am moving forewords. I will make a spreadsheet at the end of my project that peers can fill in with their views on the film and work as a whole.
