2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Directed by: Stanley Kubrick
Cinematographer: Geoffrey Unsworth

I have just finished watching 2001 tonight with my girlfriend Emma. I wanted to show her as she said she had never seen it. it was not untill I was re watching it that I relised how much it relates to my film had the film is so visualy stunning and sublime. One of the things i can learn from this film is the layout of the camera to the objects it is filming. there is a strong feel of shape and space in 2001: A Space Odyssey

the film has a lot of positive space that is surrounding.  the walls of the spaceship is negative space.  The film is made up of a series of octagons, this makes it feel claustrophobic.  This is helped by the fact that the spaceman is touching the ceiling which highlights the amount of usable space around the character. This has made me think a lot more abput how space can afect my FMP film.

The octagonal shapes start outside the rectangular frame (the TV screen) and then move inwards to create the impression that the spacecraft goes further back beyond our line of sight. The black and white lines in the ship creates strong contrast of a continuous space in which the subject matter can walk.  Also, the colours of the character are in contrast to the black and white of the surrounding area and helps draw your eye away from the negative space. the film is os well planed from every deatils. i think this is why it was/is so successeful.

There is no natural lighting and there is no artificial lighting from any particular direction.  Instead, there is artificial lighting contained inside the octagonal lines.  This helps draw your eye into the middle of the picture. The Cinematographer also has not used depth of field to knock any areas out of focus the effect this have is that is makes the structure of the space ship look stronger and it gives more detail and information to the audience as all in is focus and east to see/read.

I am really glad I re looked at such a excellent film and hope that part of this film ideas and look will be seen in my end work.
