While my mini DV footage was being captured at college I was having a chat with one of my fellow peers about what is better in art using computers or traditional art by hand. This talk lead me on to think about the matter in more detail.
Computers and digital copying are a Technological progress in digital film making; nevertheless in the exact area of Art and Design they are accountable for a helpful not essential progression in modern improvements.
I have found many pros and cons about using computers to make art work as people with no artistic ability and training can easily use the different types of powerful software and create their work, being able to do this has in some aspects reduced the standard and quality of work out there. In my opinion a computer is no contest for a professional artist even though I only work on a computer myself. Nevertheless, it has also been used as an alternative to skill and inability from the designer. The traditional methods took time and effort to craft and without skill the design would not be successful and was a lot harder to cover up bad graphics and lack of ability, unlike computer programs where there is the use of the ‘undo’ button.
Technology has pushed forward the boundaries that have formerly come about from previous labour-intensive techniques and has certainly reduced the processing period. Today has left me with a lot to think about. If computers were not around what would I be going now instead?
