Rocky III review

Rocky III
Directed by: Sylvester Stallone
Cinematographer: Bill Butler
Made in: 1982
I first saw this film in the summer holidays of 2008 on an old recorded tape that by mate let me have.

At first I could not fins a direct link to my FMP work as i was only watching it for fun but while watching the film I kept think about how the layout of the charters and objects effects the film. So for that reason I though I would review my most loved scenes in the film. The fight.

The overall composition of the fight sense is very simple as there are only two things you focus on (the two fighters) and the rest of it has a blurred background (out of focus). An equal amount of proportion has been given to the foreground, middle ground and background which gives a nice spacing, but it is the foreground your eyes get drawn to because of the action that is taking place and the vibrant colours of Rocky and the other fighter (Mr. T) compared to the rest of the shot. I hope for my film to have some cross focus shots.

Most of the fight is a mid shot because you can see all the action but still see the detail of the faces of the two boxers. The effect this has is that it really brings you in to the fight and makes you part of it, yet you can still see all of the fast moving action. I would say the cameraman had to be about 5 foot back from the main subject; this works well because, like I said before, you are there with the uproar of the action of Rocky’s punch, but you are still seeing the whole image.

The cinematography that stands out is Rocky’s boxing glove as that is the high spot of the action, also the fact that it is a nice bright red which is one of the first colours our eyes pick up on.

I know my film is nothing like rocky at all but I do always look at all the rocky films for the way the editing is done. I recommend you watch it is you have never seena  Rocky.
